Offshore drilling is often conducted from floating structures (boats or platforms), which follow the movements of the sea. Telescopic heave compensation systems are used to ensure that these movements are not passed down into the drill string.
Those systems are generally very effective, but if seas are particularly rough, or equipment is faulty, some of the movement can still be transmitted to the drill string. This results in variations in WOB and increased risk of slip and stick, in addition to drilling inefficiency and the danger of premature equipment failure.
